South Africa’s Dominant Display in 4th ODI: A Massive 416-Run Total Against Australia

Heinrich Klaasen, the South African wicketkeeper-batter, was interviewed after his incredible innings of 174 runs on just 83 deliveries against Australia in the third ODI at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. He said that he was lucky to have David Miller at the other end, and that the Australians went away from their plans in the last 15 overs.

Klaasen’s innings was the fourth highest ODI score by a South African and the second highest ODI score by a No.5 or lower behind Kapil Dev’s 175 at No.6. It is also the highest ODI score by a batter entering in the 25th over or later in and ODI. He and David Miller’s partnership of 222 off 94 balls is the fastest double-century stand in ODIs. The total of 416 for 5 is South Africa’s third highest in ODIs.

The Australians were all smiles coming off, but Klaasen said that the pitch wasn’t that easy in the first half of the innings and he felt like the Australians went away from their plans in the last 15 overs. Australia’s bowlers were woeful with the exception of Michael Neser although he had bowled out by the end of the 40th over which no doubt helped his figures.

Adam Zampa were todays’ most expensive bowler, he conceded 113 runs in his 10 overs.

The Australians will need to put up a much better performance with the ball if they want to stay in the series.
