AB de Villiers: ‘Virat Kholi is Ideal for the No. 4 Position

“Former South African cricket superstar AB de Villiers has proposed that Virat Kohli could be the solution to India’s No.4 batting dilemma for the upcoming World Cup 2023.

In a discussion on his YouTube channel, ‘AB de Villiers 360’, de Villiers, who was a former IPL teammate of Kohli, expressed his thoughts. He said, ‘There’s still ongoing debate about who should take on the No. 4 batting spot for India. I’ve heard some speculation about Virat (Kohli) potentially assuming that role. I would strongly support that idea.'”

“De Villiers continued, ‘I believe Virat is an excellent fit for No. 4. He can construct an innings effectively and adapt to any role in the middle order. I’m uncertain whether he’d be open to it, as we know he’s attached to his No. 3 position, where he has amassed most of his runs. However, in the end, if the team requires you to fulfill a certain task and play a certain role, you must step up and embrace the challenge.'”

“With Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul recently returning to the squad following their prolonged injuries, India’s middle-order composition has been a prominent subject of conversation leading up to the Asia Cup 2023 and the World Cup 2023.”

“When announcing the Asia Cup squad, Captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of adaptability in the batting lineup, urging players to be prepared to bat in various positions.”

“While Iyer, who has recuperated from his back surgery, seems the most probable candidate for the No. 4 spot, Kohli has previously thrived in that position. In his batting appearances at No. 4, Kohli has compiled seven centuries, boasting an impressive average of 55.21 along with a noteworthy strike rate of 90.66. Nonetheless, he hasn’t occupied that slot since January 2020 when he faced Australia in Mumbai.”

“Despite Iyer demonstrating stability in India’s Asia Cup training camp in Alur, KL Rahul’s fitness remains a concern, potentially causing him to miss a minimum of two matches in the Asia Cup set to commence on August 30.”
